Is belief really a choice? You decide. (14 replies)

People of faith often claim that belief is a matter of choice, and nonbelievers retort just as often that it is not. I cannot just choose to believe that my car is red, when it turns out to be blue every time I look at it. Likewise, I cannot just choose to believe that God exists. There has to be something there to convince me.

What I want to claim here is that belief is a matter of choice. We believe lots of things without much evidence at all, and we believe them because we choose to believe them. It isn't usually just a matter of pointing out that there is insufficient evidence to license a belief and walking away. In other words, we decide what to believe. In simple matters, such as the color of objects that you see every day, you decide to rely on the evidence of your vision. Unless you are prone to hallucinations, that is a good choice. In more complex matters such as the existence of a god, we cannot simply rely on everyday senses, because that kind of being is not supposed to be detectable that way.

So what kind of evidence do we rely on to strengthen our belief in a god? Is it rational? Well, it isn't completely rational to rely on the evidence of one's senses, because hallucination is always a possibility. But experience has taught us to rely on our senses. We may not exactly choose to believe specific claims, but we do pick and choose the evidence that we think licenses belief in a claim. What kinds of things do people choose to rely on when it comes to belief in a god?
